Four cars were going to be used in the bank robbery. “Now, remember,” the boss said, “until you get to Red Water Junction, you’ve got to travel in the order I just told you. What’s the order, Lem? LEM: First the Chevy, then the Datsun, the Ford and the Toyota. Boss: You got only two right. Tell him, Clem. CLEM: The Ford, the Toyota, the Datsun and the Chevy. Boss: Only one right. One that Lem got wrong. Now, you, Mutt. Mutt: Chevy, Toyota, Ford, Datsun. Boss: Every one wrong. Come on, Tex, someone’s got to get it right. Tex got them all in the right order. What was it?
REVEAL THE ANSWER
Mutt was all wrong, so Lem’s placing of the Chevy and Ford [being the same as Mutts] must also have been wrong. But Lem had two right, so these must have been the Datsun [second] and the Toyota [fourth]. Clem had only one right; it wasn’t the Toyota, because Mutt had that second and Mutt was all wrong. It wasn’t the Datsun because we already know that was one of the ones that Lem had correct as #2. And it wasn’t the Chevy, which he named fourth because Lem was correct about the Toyota being #4. So it had to be Ford, which he named as #1. This leaves the third place to the Chevy.
