Lewis Carroll posed this problem: A monkey starts to climb a rope equally divided by a pulley. At the other end of the rope is a weight which weighs exactly the same as the monkey. Will the weight remain stationary?

The weight will go up. The monkey must give an extra pull on the rope in order to accelerate himself upwards.
